"While I respect Lee Bailey's journalistic professionalism by referring to the initial Shante story that was released by slate.com, when coupled though, with Shante's statement however, the perception seems to be, (judging from all of the feedback I am reading), is that she is apologizing for lying.
Let me clarify a few facts if I may:
Shante is apologizing to those who know who her, and to those who have stood by her, as she does not want those persons to hurt. She is apologizing to the persons and organizations who she has helped with her amazing skills as a speaker and counselor in her post music career. (Trust me there are many).
I am now representing Shante, which is probably an unlikely scenario to those who know that I produced Shante's rap arch rival Sparky D, (as well as tracks for both artists along with DJ Marly Marl) for the Round 1 album.
The fact is, I have always had a good relationship with the Juice Crew. Just a few weeks before Roxannes Revenge was released, I produced Mr. Magic's "Magic's Message". I was there at the beginning of her career. I understand what she has been through. All I can say right now, is that Shante did not wake up one day and decide "I am going to concoct this story".
That is not how all this started. However, she did not help herself by perpetuating the story. She realizes that was a mistake. Which one of us is mistake free in their life? Please step forward so we can anoint you!
Shante is a very proud young lady, and would stand and take all the arrows and darts thrown at her over this. I am not going to let that happen. Why is no one going after the University that helped perpetuate this story? It was a great feel good story, "Rap chick from the projects makes good"! Well guess what! She has made good! Despite selling tons of recordings and not getting royalties, Shante has made good. She will be getting her degree, and she has raised her children well.
Sparky D too has had some issues. She has worked through them as well, and is an evangelist. Let's check her credentials too huh? The two former rivals are now good friends and are proud of their pioneering status for femcees.
I don't have a degree in recording engineering, does that mean I am not an engineer? A quick check of all of the records that I have engineered and produced would beg to differ. Is Dr. Phil, in fact a doctor? If you want to check peoples credentials, that's fine. Where do we start, and where do we end?
In the meantime, I will stand here with Shante fully loaded and ready to fire back. There are some questions to be answered. And I am soon going to start asking. Through my attorneys, publicists and every other ally I can align with.
This woman is a Hip-Hop icon, and I am not going to stand idly by while people without all of the facts, try to tear her down.
At the appropriate time, all of the facts will be detailed. For now, understand that she is apologetic for this story to have caused anyone any angst."
