Duane "Spyder" Hughes, born in Peoria, Illinois, and moved to Hollis, New York, at the age of four, where he earned the nickname "Spyder" on the basketball playgrounds of Queens.
His skinny legs and arms, and his penchant for copying the spin move of his basketball idol, New York Knick Hall Of Famer Earl "The Pearl" Monroe, reminded spectators of a spider. Spyder weaved his way through and around opposing guards to score from all angles of the court.
"Had they had the three point line in my senior year, I would have averaged way more than the 19 points per game I finished with", recalls Spyder.
He finished his senior year at Richmond Hill H.S., as the captain of the team that missed the playoffs on the last game of the season versus August Martin H.S.. Spyder scored his 19 point average, and dished out ten assists, but the Lions lost in the closing seconds when key missed free throws by one of the other seniors on the team doomed their playoff hopes. "I was devastated by that loss. The playoffs meant big time scouts, and I wanted to be on the big stage at St. Johns University for the Queens H.S. playoffs", laments Spyder.
Despite missing the playoffs, Spyder still earned Honorable Mention and All-Queens honors, and took his skills to the Eastern Michigan University campus, where his knees, damaged from all of the years on the playgrounds, finally gave in. He was told to stop playing all together by the football team doctors. That led him to a deep depression that he was only brought out of by his other passion.
MUSIC!
Thus, Spydo Music was born.
Spydo Music was originally formed as an all encompassed entertainment company. It is now a totally different era from whence the company was originally founded, and keeping with this new era, Spyder (whose artist name is Spyder D), is announcing the relaunching of his Newtroit Record label that was spawned on the campus of Eastern Michigan University after realizing his basketball career was over.
Newtroit Records made Spyder D the first rap artist to start his own label, in 1979, at the tender age of nineteen. Now, under the unmbrella of Spydo Music, Inc., the label will bring back memories of Berry Gordy's Motown, as it will sign, develop and release it's own stable of self contained artists. Stay tuned...coming real soon...the debut of Dorris Dae, a break beats sampler from world reknowned DJ Divine, The Detroit stable of North End Records featuring Doughnut, Ruff (the grandson of Motown legend David Ruffin), Universal, Storm Dog, Baby Yo, Half Life, from New York, DJ K-Wiz and his productions on Broadway and Grand Finale, from Dallas the Banguz Entertainment Click, and the neo-soul sounds of Jaz Jordan, and the Gospel Harmonies of Kieth Holland and Friends, with Holy Hip-Hop rapper K-Day. All from Spydo Music...Online and on target!
Never forget where you came from and be proud of where you're going... Also look out for great things from "Brooklin Stone" an up and coming screenplay writer for that urban, krunk flava...Ya Heard?
The incomparable Richard Pryor, seen here with Spyder's Dad (backstage at an early 1970's performance), was also a Peoria native, and grew up with Spyder's Mom and Dad.
"He was the realest entertainer of all time. He made us laugh at his pain, and made us all forget about our troubles through laughter", exclaimed Spyder about his entertainer idol. "I was deeply disturbed by his passing, until I put on his Bicentennial Nigger album. I was on the floor laughing. That's Richard though. I know he's in heaven crackin' everybody up".
Brand new Spyder D single, "Venom", from the forthcoming "Legendary" CD.
Also, over the years, Spyder has been asked to appear on many compilations of hip-hop and electro-funk albums with a host of other prominent artists from the Eighties. Here is one of those albums, Christmas Rap, which featured Run-DMC, Dana Dane, Jekyll & Hyde among others. On this classic, Spyder's tale of a ghetto Santa being robbed in the hood, was one of the most critically acclaimed cuts on the album. You can find many of these now rare albums on Ebay . Many of these are must haves on most DJ vinyl collector's lists. Please feel free to send feedback and or questions regarding these rare classics, and we will do our best to accomodate any and all questions, requests, etc.
Newsflash:Chrissy Wallace made her NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series debut Saturday March 29th, 2008, in the Kroger 250 at Martinsville Speedway, following in her father’s footsteps. Mike Wallace, Chrissy’s father who drives the GEICO Camry for Germain Racing, made his NASCAR career debut at Martinsville in 1990. Chrissy Wallace started 35th and finished 18th, on the lead lap, after running as high as 11th during the 250-lap event. “I wanted a top-20 finish for the GEICO/Mobil Delvac Tundra and I got it,” said Wallace.
Said Spyder D, "I am elated to announce the signing of Chrissy Wallace, Daughter of NASCAR star Mike Wallace, (whose brothers are racing legend and ESPN Racing analyst Rusty Wallace, and younger brother Kenny Wallace, who is a former NASCAR Rookie of The Year), to a deal where she will have her own racing jacket and other related merchandise.
"Chrissy and her Dad Mike Wallace are the inspiration behind the design that I conceived, that was so expertly interpreted through the genius of graphic artist Chris Drew here in Atlanta. Chris and I had worked together on some other things involving our Krunk Basketball franchise uniforms and Basketainment, our DVD division. That relationship made it easy for me to convey my vision to him, knowing that he already understood how my style and taste worked. He nailed it, and so did the seamstress that made the prototype. The result was pure heat. These jackets are as hot as anything on the market", beamed an elated Duane "Spyder" Hughes.
"I was introduced to the Wallaces by my good friend Sybrena Foster of VASY4. Sybrena is a producer and public relations specialist of noteriety from the Miami area, and will be handling a lot of promotion and publicity on the project. She interviewed Chrissy for me last year for my "All Ballers Allowed" e-zine, around the time I was dabbling with the idea of doing a racing jacket. I saw that the kids in the urban areas were starting to take to these NASCAR racing jackets, so, since I had first tried my hand at designing with our Krunk basketball uniform, I decided to come up with something unique in a racing jacket. After consulting with Patty Wright of Seventh House Designs, I decided to let her do the prototype and her seamstress nailed it. A virtual carbon copy of the graphic concept. As with our basketball uniforms, I wanted to do something different. We had cargo pants pockets on our uniforms! I didn't want to get too carried away with the jackets so I only added zip away sleeves to the design"
"We are close to an agreement with a manufacturing and distribution deal as we speak, and will be announcing that alliance as soon as the ink is dry", said Spyder D, as he is professionally known.
"Chrissy is an accomplished racer, at such a young age, and her family name and heritage are something we are proud to be associated with. Chrissy is a big fan of Hip-Hop, and will be co-starring in my title track video later this spring, entitled "Legendary". The last name Wallace is legendary in the annals of racing, and the song is about legendary rap artists that I have had the pleasure of working with during my career so it is a perfect fit."
The jackets will be in blue or white, and depending on the season, or geographical location, will be available in anything from leather, suede, wool, or nylon. For the hot summer months, there will also be t-shirts with the flame logo, and baseball caps. They will be available online and in retail outlets by the end of May, 2008.
Chrissy Wallace, born in 1988, is racing her way to the top.
She is the daughter of Mike Wallace, the middle brother of the Wallace racing triumvirate, that includes the recently retired legend Rusty Wallace, and the younger, former NASCAR Rookie Of The Year, Kenny Wallace.
As her Father Mike and Uncle Kenny continue making their mark in the Craftsmen Truck, Nextel and Busch Series, young Chrissy is winding up asecond successful season in Charlotte, at the Arena Racing USA ( www.ArenaRacingUSA.com ) season held at the Cricket Arena.
Last year, the 5' 4", slim, but very athletic Ms. Wallace, was attempting to become the first driver to win three "main" races in a row in Arena Racing, a rare feat in a fast paced indoor version of motor speedway racing, that was popularized in the Virginia area, and is endorsed by legendary Championship race team owner and Super Bowl Champ Joe Gibbs.
Winning is nothing new to Ms. Wallace, who has gained the respect of male counterparts due to handling winning and losing, with equal aplomb, and has not rested on the laurels of her famous last name.
Her Mother, Carla Wallace helps keep the recently graduated Chrissy grounded in reality, while encouraging her to reach her goals as well. Of course, she has learned a lot from her Dad, as they are on course to be the first Father/Daughter team in all three major race series.
Chrissy has quite an impressive rack of wins under her belt, and has raced since a very tender age. Besides the current Arena racing, Chrissy has also raced and won in Legend's Cars, Thunder Roadsters, Late Models, and Pro-Challenge.
Her next step:
